This theme also grew from a sketch I wrote while demoing for this film. I was pleased with the way the orchestration for this cue worked out. The melody is carried by nylon guitar and clarinet while the backing orchestra is comprised of tiple, ukulele and fender rhodes sweetened by cello and viola.

The Accident 04:29
In some ways this is the visual and musical cornerstone of the entire film. The music had to speak to a dramatic precipice for the main characters and also comment on a painful flashback which happens simultaneously. Subtlety was key here, and the musicians were required to play with tremendous restraint as even too much vibrato would stand out and overwhelm the moment. This is my favorite cue in the film.

about

Let yourself be moved by the score from Rabbit Hole, a dramatic feature film directed by John Cameron Mitchell and starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, that follows a couple whose lives are shattered by the sudden death of their son.

Composer Anton Sanko is a seasoned industry veteran, who has scored award-winning television series (Big Love) and film projects, in addition to collaborating with artists such as Suzanne Vega, Anna Domino, and the late writer/rocker Jim Carroll.

Subtle and delicate, Sanko’s score provides an effective contrast to the powerful drama on screen. The cue “Cleaning” for example, which is the first music we hear, employs lighter instruments such as the ukulele, charango, flutes and woodwind, underneath one of the heaviest scenes in the entire film. In a film hinged on poignant dialogue (and much of it), Sanko is deftly able to let the words shine, while quietly elevating and deepening the emotional impact of the entire piece.
